Questions And Answers
What does free really mean for the veteran?
The initial office visit is completely free. There is no charge or co-pay at the time of the visit and you will not be billed after the visit is completed. No billing of any insurance, Tricare, Medicare, Medicaid, DoD, or even regular insurance, for the initial office visit.
What is included in the initial office visit?
At the initial office visit in the doctor’s office the veteran will fill out the medically related medical paperwork. A medical chart will be developed with recording as appropriate vital signs, the reason for the office visit, the physician written history, chief complaint and physical exam followed by the physician discussing and making recommendations about the veterans healthcare. Finally the physician will give you a written set of medical orders or recommendations for future health related needs. As you leave you will also receive a receipt showing the type of visit and that there was No Charge.
How will the written orders be fulfilled?
The normal method of obtaining healthcare will be used to for fulfilling the follow-up to complete the written orders or recommendations. If the veteran has qualified for VA services the orders may be taken to a VA facility for their approval and completion. As an alternative if the veteran has insurance coverage and does not wish to go through the VA the orders can be completed at any facility or office that accepts the orders or recommendations. Standard co-pays apply. If the veteran does not currently have insurance coverage then arrangements need to be made about payment before the services are performed.
How much will the written orders cost?
The medical services requested in the written orders will be handled like any other prescription for medication or tests including charges and insurance coverage and co-pays. These additional services are not free and payment arrangements need to be clear before proceeding. These additional services are not included in The Veterans’ Promise.
How do I get an appointment?
To take advantage of our service the veteran is not allowed to contact a physician directly. Each veteran will log on to the AmAOP.org website. Find and click the Veteran’s Contact. This will take you to the Veteran’s Request page and there you are able to send us your request. If you want an appointment, fill out an Email Appointment Request. We do not want you to include any private health information in your email. This is not a confidential electronic information portal. You may request a particular type of physician or clinician, like a Dermatologist, Cardiologist or Psychiatrist, or you may request a particular type of visit, like a physical or a well woman exam. We do not accept requests to complete an order by another physician, like an X-ray or a biopsy. Upon receiving your email the AmAOP staff will verify your Veteran Status using the DD-219 number. Contact the physician’s office on your behalf and then inform you by return email of your appointment status.
If you just want information or have any other reason to contact us this page will allow you to send that information to us by email.
What healthcare services are available?
The AmAOP staff will maintain a list of available services. These services are changing frequently, therefore, a list will not be available on line. A veteran may request a healthcare service, if it is a currently available service the provider will be contacted about an appointment. If the service is not available the veteran will be informed and alternate healthcare options may be considered.
